Andy- I should have added the first rule of model railroads- "Your Railroad Your Rules". I'm not looking to talk you out of anything, and adding your comment about how your boys like to push trains around, then maybe the reverse loops are best to keep. I will remind you that the reverse loops will limit the length of a train to the maximum that will fit and clear the switch before the engine gets there.
Here are a couple simply wye plans done in SCARM. Neither are perfect and would take some fitting in place to make them work.
