I had a couple AHM I used in yard areas...maybe 35 years ago...and that was two layouts ago. I don't recall having any problems with derails, but it was slow speed with small engines and small strings of cars. I am pretty sure I used the switchmachines that came with them. I would double check what you are saying about radious. Seems to me they were only 36" radious but I am not certain.
