The very first run of 054 turnouts featured the main route which had a 14 1/2 " straight leg ,one piece. This was redesigned and the mainline dimension changed to 10".This made the 054 turnout a "drop in" that was easy to replace any 10" straight on the layout. It also allowed users to assemble a "yard" featuring more closely spaced sidings.
