Alerts and reactions are two different things. Apples and oranges.
An alert only notifies you when something new has been posted to a thread you are following. If you are using a thread as a point of reference for building or fixing something, you may need to refer back to it, even though nothing new has been posted to it. There would be no alert, but if you had stored a reaction to that thread, the link will be in your profile.
