Sounds like the making of a 21st century Penn Central. If there were going to be any merger scenario it would have to preserve competition. A CSX / NS merger wouldn't do that. The more likely merger partners for CSX would either be BNSF or UP. Even those scenarios have conflicts with anti-trust issues. While it has long been rumored the end game would leave the US with perhaps 2 to 3 class ones, it doesn't seem likely for some time to come.
