Lionel 0-6-0 Docksider E-Unit Issue

I recently purchased a Lionel 0-6-0 Docksider. The detail and workmanship of the engine is very good. It runs great and is a great puller. I am having an issue with the electronic E unit. It sometimes will not reverse (usually in a hard to reach spot). Short of replacing the board, any suggestions out there? I also stalls on my 5121 and 5122 switches sometimes. My guess is the short wheel base hits a dead spot on the switch, but thought I would add it to the post.
