Lionel #50 Gang Car Runs In Same Direction

I have a #50 Gang that stopped running in one direction. After reviewing some articles in this forum, I noticed only one coil wire was attached to the brush plate terminal (it must have broke off without leaving a lead for re-soldering). So I decided to unwind the coil wire (#1) from the field assembly. This action left the other coil wire (#2) wrapped inside the field assembly. I rewound wire (#1) on top of coil wire (#2) and left enough of a lead to solder it back onto the brush plate. Now the Gang Car runs in the same direction no matter what direction the reversing slide assembly is in. What did I do wrong?
