The reason the parts didnt fit is because you do not have a 1946 locomotive. From the side profile it appears to have nickle plated drivers on numbers 1 2 3 and 4 which makes it a 1947.

It also has an e unit lever and angled motor which makes it a 47-49 candidate. The 46 has no e unit levrr and a larger horizontal mounted "atomic" motor
