I have the Aztrax detectors. Work like a champ with incandescent or LED lamps shining down on my layout, reliably trigger first time every time. Granted I could go the computer route, but by the time I am done buying the board(s), the software, the programmer, getting my PC to talk to programmer, learning the language, saying words my mother would soap my mouth, the Aztrax was the quick and simple way to go.
Different strokes different folks.
