Attempting to detect a specific loco is interesting and does not appear trivial. Although RFID would work, a simpler arrangement which would employ multiple reed relays stacked vertically with a small amount of spacing in the track area of interest might be easier to implement. A magnet could be placed on the locos to align with the corresponding reed relay vertical location. I might just try this out.
