I think I'd like to play with the reed switches. What's a good source for the switches and the magnets?

On the issue of the Arduino talking to the TIU -- it's done just like the remote handheld, via a radio.

(SanDiegoMark helped me with the TIU radio connection.)

I don't use the serial port on the Arduino.

Also, I have both the Arduino Nano and the Arduino Pro Mini. I'm considering replacing the Arduino Uno I currently use with the Nano. My Arduino Uno is a 3.3 v version, which means I can connect it directly to the radio which is also 3.3 v. The Nano and Pro Mini are 5 v, so rather than use level shifters, I'll go with the 3.3 v versions of both the Nano and the Pro Mini.

I guess I can order the Adafruit RFID stuff today. I'll play with it and keep everyone posted on the results.
