I used to use tamiya tape and really burnish the ends...try frog tape...regular or low tack! The adhesive coagulates when something liquid hits it and seals the edge.

BTW- nice new paint scheme ya did...I'd go a fallen flag if I had an engine like that one....a nice chinese red and grey.
