Because in buying MTH's tooling for the Amfleet cars they probably saved a boatload of cash over essentially cloning GGD's efforts (and avoid over-serving the market for finescale versions of these cars). It's probably also why Atlas didn't buy MTH's autorack tooling -- their Gunderson model was probably already in the works (or planning stages) when that opportunity presented itself.
