Dave, Yes, I think the placemats would be too flimsy to move around. My Christmas layout (which I didn't put up this year) is a sheet of 2" Styrofoam. It is quite sturdy when moving around. I used a square section of Styrofoam about 4x4 under the Christmas tree for several years in the past.
