I've always found that if you have some knowledge of the railroad or the locomotives, the staff is a bit more inviting.  You're not looked upon as an intrusion or nuisance.  Especially if you can tell them information that they don't know.  With this particular experience I told the engineer that I lived a few blocks from EMD  when I was growing up,  talked about the basic construction of a cab unit,( the sides were built like a bridge truss making them integral to the structural rigidity of the unit,) pointing out the Roots blower,  and talked about how New Haven had 5 axle locos for the third rail pickup to go into Grand Central Terminal. It was a great time.
