Unfortunately, over the course of the last 35 years, since Amtrak left, nobody did -- except finally Bill Ford. Those of us who are local residents thank him profusely for this immense commitment. I can, without any sort of reservation, cut him the slack.
In return for his investment he can do what he wants to best tell the station's, and the city's, story, including the leaving some of the graffiti in place.
We Detroiters have wished and hoped and lamented and cajoled and asked and postulated and rallied and protested, and eventually prayed every day -- over all these years, from us being youngsters back then to old folks now -- pushing all of our emotions forward for the day when Michigan Central, and this proud city as well, would successfully turn around.
As the years went on it was looking increasingly impossible, and in fact quite dire, but somehow it happened, thanks to Bill Ford and people like him.
Thank God it finally happened.
Thank you Bill Ford!
She's beautiful once again; stunningly magnificent -- even with the graffiti.

Kudos to him for the billion bucks. Opinions may vary but I still think leaving the graffiti is an eyesore. Otherwise, itβs a great restoration.
