@TrainNewby you are wise to keep things as simple as possible - you can add complexity as you learn.
For example, if you pursue the isolated track sections as suggested by @ArtsModelTrains , you may run into problems with some Lionel engines (modern gp38, for example) that have two traction tires on each truck, so the non-derail won’t trigger in time, or the engine will stall due to the dead signal rail. Each step of complexity is accompanied by an almost exponential increase in ways to fail (and learn!)
