@gunrunnerjohn is spot on here.  Once you take them off the screen to look at the train your fingers-and-thumbs skills slow down dramatically because of the lack of tactile feedback.

Most of us want to watch the train while we're controlling it.  A phone as a controller, to me, is too slow as a result because of the need to constantly move your eyes back and forth from the train to the phone -- something that's especially critical, when it becomes necessary, to initiate an emergency stop to avoid a wreck.

(This is not trivial.  Several postings in the last week have referred to wrecks when using the new Base 3.  True, these have been apparently because of slow response by the system, but it doesn't help if the operator can't the activate the controls quickly enough in the process.)
