Nice theory but a bad joint would show up even with smoke off occasionally. The bad fan motor is not just current but noise and since 5V is used for micro controller in PS-2, and almost everything in PS-3 plus tach it causes the jerky operation. So it is the first go to with those symptoms. G

The more I thought about it, the more I realized the same thing. The problem would show up without smoke on, especially around corners.
