Slave board failure if/ when main PS2 board fails

Most of us are aware of the infamous wincap 330uf cap on PS-2-5V boards, I managed to change a couple on my locos with 5v boards before they failed thanks to gunrunnerjohn. However I bought a non running MTH Alco FA ABA set a month or so back and the 330uf cap had already blown. I figured the board was dead but replaced the 330 cap anyway still dead. Which leads to several questions. Is there a common failure mode on these boards when the 330uf cap fails and does it take the slave board with it ? If so, does the slave also have a common failure mode when the master board fails? Thanks, j
