Upgrading Older 5 Volt Steamer to PS3

Hey all...

Here's my problem. Got a small steamer with a "dead as a door nail" board, it even smells. I'm trying to upgrade with PS3. the thing is, the tender and engine have one pickup each. There are no connections that I can see for pickup in the tender. I'm uncertain about running with just the pickup on the engine. Any help would be appreciated.
