A G gauge South Pacific Coast 4th of July special passenger train is shown below. The South Pacific Coast was a narrow gauge railroad that was built from my hometown, Alameda, CA, on San Francisco Bay to Santa Cruz, CA on the Pacific Coast. There were, and still are, huge forests of redwood trees in the coastal mountains surrounding Santa Cruz. The railroad was built to haul lumber from the forest to San Francisco Bay.
The South Pacific Coast was taken over by the Central Pacific Railroad (eventually Southern Pacific) in the late 1800s and converted to standard gauge. Portions of the South Pacific Coast route are operated today by the Union Pacific.
