Thank you both for your replies.

I was able to borrow a ZW and substitute it for my Z. The ten-wheeler runs perfectly, even at 6v. Speed is constant at any given voltage setting.

There must be problem with the Z - I'll send it off to a transformer repairman for an overhaul.
