Zinc Pest on new Lionel castings

My sons Bethlehem Steel 060 dockside switcher suffered the dreaded pest. The rear diecast coupler disentegrated in his hands. This engine is only 3 years old. Is this common in the new stuff as well? Are they recycling the material too much and is the boiler castings in trouble as well ? Has anyone had any trouble with this as well.
