Finally found and purchased an all original 1937 700ew!! It was a small fortune and my wife looked at me like I was crazy and seemed confused on to why I would make such a purchase. I never grew up playing with Lionel trains, however I have gotten into the hobby a few years ago because of a conversation I had with my grandfather one Christmas. After dinner, while opening presents, I asked my grandfather what was a gift he always wanted and never received. He said he was blessed to have survived the depression and the war. Blessed to have had a loving family, children and friends money could not buy. He had most of what he needed and some items he enjoyed, but as teenager in 1937 he visited family in New York City. While there he walked past a Lionel display case and saw the 700e. He went inside but after discovering the price he knew it wasn't a purchase that could be made. Many years later, he bought my uncle a Lionel set in the 1960s but what happened to it he didn't know. It been 5 years now since he passed, and with the holidays fast approaching I'd thought I'd honor the man who taught me so much by sharing this story. This train will now be just a small reminder and family heirloom to be passed down. Enjoy the pics!!!

Very nice post. 700EW looks great.
That 700EW is a beaut. Great find. I think they're about the finest example of what Lionel was capable of back then.
Looks good. Good memories.
I asked my mom once why my dad bought a 671 freight set when my brother was just born and me two years in the future.
She said he never had any kind of toys during the 30s and wanted to make sure his kids had the train he never had.
I am sure he is all smiles from up above looking down on the splended 700e on the shelf. Have you tried to run the engine or does you layout have to tight curves for the big girl to manage? One of these 700e's is on my proverbial wish list, probably never to be realized due to cost and I have no room for the curves it requires. Congrats on a special purchase! AD
It does run and whistle as it should. I was sent a video of it running before I purchased it and I tested it when I received it but I do not have the room for a set up that size either. I need to take some more pictures of it as it has little run time and really in amazing shape and it keep it that way I will just display it and do yearly maintenance. If you want one, don't give up, one is actually on eBay right know for $960.00! 1/4th the cost I paid for mine! Check it out, let me know what you think of it.
