Here is a really great video showing proper handling of real freight cars and what happens with hard coupling.
There is also a scene where a boxcar t-bones another boxcar at a switch.
I wish I were less acquanited with that than I am.
I like the Studebaker truck pulling the Santa Fe trailer.
There are also other vintage automobiles in the video.

Wow, that's a real period piece.  LCL shipments with manual loading of individual boxes, loose-car switching, a UP turbine engine, icing refrigerator cars, hotboxes. People excited about buying a TV set! And the railroad has a whole warehouse of damaged merchandise!

 

At 14:40, Union Pacific turbine #57 appears briefly with a tank car tender which may have been the propane fuel experiment during 1953-54.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_GTELs
