Hi guys,

This is my first post here!

I've recently acquired a '48 2020 and the drive gear on the axle has been ground down with a nice big groove down the center.

Looks like the previous owner never lubed anything.  Just black and brass-bit filled greases on the walls of the "gear-box" on the chassis.

I ordered a new gear today, but have never had to replace one before.  Is there a recommended procedure to get the wheels/gear off the axle and get the new one on?   I don't have any kind of a gear puller/press, but was thinking maybe I could use my drill press to push down in the axle?    Any advise would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

As has been stated, a wheel puller is is used to remove the wheels properly without damaging them, the axle, or locomotive frame. Reassembling the wheels and quartering them really needs a proper press with wheel cups. A press does not come cheap. The procedures necessary to do the repair can be done without the proper equipment if you are handy and innovative. A trip to your local Lionel repair shop would be recommended if you are not sure, or you want the job done properly.
