Experienced 3-railers:

I have a UP Big Boy that has been in storage for about 10 years.  Got it out, lubed it up, and it fired right up!  Awesome, right?  Well about ten minutes later it slipped a traction tire.  Guess the time was not kind to the rubber.  Wa, wa, wa...

My questions:

1.  Can I run it without the silly rubber tires?

2.  If I order them, is it straightforward to remove the hex nut and slip the it under the operating rod?

3.  Should I really just ship it off to a service center?

Thanks!

Lloyd

1. Yes, but you won't be able to pull as well, and it may track funny.

2. I had no issues replacing tires on a MTH Hudson I had.  There was enough movement in the rod that once the screw was out, the tire would slip under it fine.  Before you order any, look in the box, most locomotives ship with an extra set.  My locomotive was from 1996, and the replacement tires it shipped with were still good.

3. Only if you have a great aversion to working on your own trains.
