To get our "train hunting" brains primed on the eve of York, how about a potential PostWar mystery? Here is set 1607 from 1958:

1C01EA8F-D050-4D1F-9086-F5B16AA19757

A high-end O27 work train with a unique new car, the 6660 Boom car, which appeared only in 58 and in only two sets..........this one and the UP diesel switcher set which appear a few pages before.

We received another generous donation the other day.

No set box. The cars are all in appropriate 1958 boxes.

This is what we got:

2037 with whiastle tender

6465 Gulf tank car

6818 Flatcar with transformer

6468 New Haven automobile Box car instead of a 6464 New Haven box car

6112 Blue gondola with white canisters

6660 Boom Car

6119 Work caboose.

Appropriate O27 track and a 1044 Transformer.

Is this set 1607?

Many of us have heard stories when consists were changed at the retail store. Could the New Haven 6464 box car have been switched to the New Haven 6468 double door boxcar? That is my guess.

Any other thoughts?

By the way, with cleaning, the set will be classified as very good. The car boxes show some minor wear......I am looking forward to running it after it has been serviced.

Peter

Lionel and the dealers seemed to be very flexible in their set consists.  Swapping out cars a customer wanted in order to make a sale  Part source variations and mold variations are also known to exist.  Years ago I bought a cache of service station parts inventory which included two crisp 3665 replacement shells.  Instead of being white they are uniformly tan through and through.  They were made off if the 3619 helicopter car mold.  Go figure.

Mike, the data you wanted is in the pdf file on page 2.
