This is my first attempt with a semi-permanent installation. As it happens to many of us, 3 years ago this all started as an oval track with two switches to run trains that have been stored for almost 15 years. That was on a small corner of my computer workstation I recently built and installed. With the shelving and counter space footprint in place the table was quickly overrun with track ,wires and trains, the computer and workstation relocated and the expansion of the table began as well as incorporating the grade to build up!

Many thanks to the OGR community for all the amazing input posts and ideas.
This forum has been such a valuable resource of information even way before I joined.

Tim, you have really packed in a lot of railroad in a small space!  A man after my own heart!!  The trains are really tooling around the layout handsomely!  I really like all the lighting you have under each level!  Well done!

I have the same feeling for this forum as you do.  So many folks have helped me and given me inspiration since I joined 13 years ago!!

Hey Pete, yes I have. In fact today I purchased Rail Modeller track planning software for my iMac and I am learning how to use it. I installed the free version a week or two ago to test it out.  I have some plans mapped out on graph paper, but it’s taking up way too much time to get them finalized. The software seems to be the answer and is user friendly.

I’m glad you liked the video, thanks for watching.

Thanks Mark. My original plan for this layout here was to do just that, make it action packed in a dense area. I sometimes need the hands on approach to the learning curve. The future plan has more room to expand and include scenery, a more realistic grade and an area of freight and engine storage facilities.

this current setup would fit well in your 11x11 space!

I have included a rough, not to scale outline of the space I will be working with. I have not framed out my basement as of yet, hopefully this will be completed by next fall. The 12' line is a new wall that seperates the mechanical area and washroom. I have an area back there for my workbench and a yard/staging area. the wall will have a portal for train operation accessIMG_9231

It will be fun to see what you plan as my under Constructiion layout is about the same shape and dimensions but flipped. I also have a 12' wall which separates my studio/workspace aka the third guest room with an air mattress on occasion for granddaughter. I THOUGHT about putting a portal through the wall but don't have the nerve PLUS I'm not sure how to set it up on the other side without completely interfering with my studio space. Looking forward to your progress.
