At the last TCA show I bought a lithographed tin AF engine shell for $1. It looks zephyr-like and appears to have an round opening in a rear cross base for an articulated car, also a pin facing downward at the rear. It is silver and has the number 9900 on the side. My price guide doesn't show that number. Needs cleaned up a little and the tin needs a little straightening but I have a Lionel motor/wheels that will fit and might run it as a rail car. Any info would be appreciated.

the tinplate version of the 9900 came as both clockwork and electric versions.
i pulled out the motor (one screw, no big deal) from my electric...
while the clockwork version uses a battery (for the headlight) as a counterweight, the electric motor has a weight attached to the motor up front. the position of the motor in the powered unit is such that without a weight, the heavier rear would tip the car enough to likely cause derailments.
probably any 4wh motor that would fit would work with a bracket attached. the original motor has skid pickups, so you're probably better off with a replacement for greater layout compatibility anyway. fyi, the distance from the tire tread (railhead) to the bracket pivot is almost exactly 3".
all those wires lead to a manual reverse in the rear of the unit.
good luck with it.
cheers...gary

So it was prewar?? Which I figured. We have a TCA show at the end of Jan. and I can look for parts, cars or whatever. I have the Lionel inexpensive zephyr so this goes along with that. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
