The  repair parts received in march were defective as well.

The gearbox/lurching issue will not be fixed until "early fall" when the next batch of(hopefully corrected) parts is sent over along with techs from the factory in China to install them.

Dean Brassuer: "For consumers who purchased the Mogul engine and experienced a possible hesitation in the engine performance, please reach out to Lionel Customer Service at 1-800-4LIONEL to initiate the process."

"We have been working with the factory and determined a good solution to fix the issue at hand. The Customer Service team will work with you on next steps and timing for the repair. The factory will be sending over technicians to our facility in NC to complete the updates."

"In order to eliminate future delays to existing 2018 production schedules, the update / fix will be completed in early fall. If you feel your locomotive is effected we ask that you send your locomotives in now in order to speed up the repair process."

"All engines will be checked / tested by our in-house Customer Service Technicians and Engineering team to ensure they meet the approved Lionel standard. Engines will be returned as promptly as possible pending parts delivery. Due to the nature of the repair all  engines must be returned directly to Lionel and not an authorized service center."

I spoke with Ryan Kunkle at Charles Ro's Open House last week and, based on our conversation, my understanding is that all the engines sent overseas have now been repaired and the factory is satisfied with the results. To be sure, Lionel has sent a tech/rep overseas to verify that the engines are working correctly and up to their standards and, if so, they will be shipped out in about two weeks. Obviously, you need to then factor in travel time back to Lionel and then out to customers, but it looks like we should see them in about 4-6 weeks or less.

I would like to know if all dealer stock has been repaired before I commit to buying one. If not, where would Lionel stand on warranty coverage.

They were selling dealers stock well after the problem surfaced. They knew about it and still were selling defective or potentially defective units. So I really doubt anything's been done with dealer stock.  I may be wrong....

I recall reading on the Forum that after Lionel decided to send the models back to China for repair, they requested that dealers return their in-stock models for repair.

I remember reading a post on another thread (I believe the poster was Ryan Kunkle) that about 12% of the Mogul production run was returned for repair.

If I remember correctly, Lionel decided to send the Moguls back to China AFTER only receiving the small number of returns.  It was less expensive than bringing techs here to do the repairs.

You guys have been way more than patient about this.

I really wanted the locomotive.  Lionel makes so very few small scale Legacy steamers that I wasn't willing to not get it, or to return it for a refund.  So I sent it back to get repaired.  I look forward to getting mine back and running it.  If they truly are done and headed back, then I'll have it back before my birthday.

I just now, received an email that I have a FEDEX delivery coming Saturday from Lionel. This can be only one thing;, my Mogul back from repair for the infamous problem.

Yes, best news I’ve heard since oct 2017.   I knew they were either back being checked out by Lionel or soon to be back.  Can’t wait.  Be like getting a new engine all over again.

Sad, bad news. I got my Mogul back today. Lionel did not send it back to China, stating they received it after the window for repair in China had closed. The NC technician tried to improve the performance, but could not. Earlier this year (May), when I was following this forum, Lionel did not want us to send them. I checked the forum a few more times after that and there were more posts about parts not working, in other words Lionel still not ready. When did the initial call to send them in go out? All I can see now is a last call by Dave Olson 08/27. I missed it by one or two months, so I'm denied a repair for something that took Lionel 10 months to recognize and resolve. I registered my Mogul on the Lionel web site for warranty very early on. Lionel should have contacted all owners that had registered their Mogul. Lionel contacted dealers, but not owners!

This really is sad news. I remember specifically asking Dave Olsen how long Lionel would honor the repair window for this engine and that question went unanswered.  In all reality this run of the mogul is completely tainted regardless of which ones have been fixed or not. There are so many out there that went unrepaired, that you'll never know if you are buying a fixed or unfixed unit without thoroughly checking it out first.

Oman, I guess all that can be said now is congratulations on your purchase a a very expensive, highly detailed, paper weight.

That's unfortunate, I would be VERY unhappy if that happened!

Agreed!

Considering the mogul chassis are probably the same it’s hard to believe they didn’t have a few extra repaired!

I was told yesterday that the repaired moguls have not left China yet.

What I am about to say will be anathema to Lionel's ears:

I do not have a Legacy Mogul, and I will never get one.

I have over a hundred locomotives. Many Legacy engines were purchased new. An approximately equal number were purchased used on eBay.

The engines I purchased new, failed more than twice as often as those purchased off eBay. About 5 years ago, I stopped purchasing anything new from Lionel, except for parts.

I have no need to brag about getting every new release, or the desire to speculatively pre-order future problems. I wait for a few years to see which items are duds. I then purchase used, but decent operating locomotives that are known to be reliable.

Lionel's current engineering and project management staff is spread far too thin doing too many far flung projects. Moreover, in my opinion, Lionel's personnel lack the skill and the years of experience necessary to effectively perform.

I can only hope that someone at Lionel is listening to their customers venting about their problems.  There have been far too many quality issues surface of late for them to ignore in my opinion.  Lionel is an iconic brand that everyone that I know wishes well.   We are all loyal Lionel customers that have had our faith and trust in them shaken to the core by recent events.

This forum while paid for and supported by Lionel and other manufacturers needs the honest feedback from their customers.  It should be one of the most valuable assets that they receive for their advertising dollars spent here.  We praise them when they get it right, but they should want to know when they don't.

With that assumption, I believe Lionel needs to address these issues.

Art

I would agree. If you cant fix it , then refund in order . I have one that I think is in China for repair/rebuild. I asked about and Lionel agreed to individually test each locomotive before its returned to customers to insure that the operating problems were corrected. I also asked about a new warranty for the repaired locos but have not heard on that one.

Has Lionel stated that they will not give him his money back. Let’s hear the rest of this story before this continues down the same old forum road. If stuck with this shelf queen then by all means never support them again. On the other hand, why are we not switching our dollars to MTH etc? There must be a reason.

I agree with you Rod, there has to me more to that particular story.......So before the call to arms, and all the farmers get their pitchforks ready, let’s here the rest of the story!....I seem to recall one fella with a different locomotive, that when his unit was not repairable or something like that he was offered some sort of replacement.....not 100% sure the exact details, but it was along those lines....and it was posted here on this forum.....hold off on the forum stormtroopers just for a bit, if OMAN doesn’t get any help, then go ahead a conquer Concord..........Pat

Many of us already have. I for one. We just don't make a big deal about it.

Pete

Will be hard to do since MTH will be looking for a new manufacturing site for their steam locomotives.

What is confusing is only about 11 to 15 percent of the Moguls were returned for repair. What about the other 85 percent? Did they not have the same issue?

There has been no updates and the recent Dave and Ryan shows have been losing credibility with the hobbyist. They need to reduce the "clowning around" on the show.

Honestly, just my suggestion, Lionel has produced some winners this past year and I would just stick with buying those.
