I think this is one of the most beautiful sets in O scale.

Thanks a lot! What is that curve that the MWH is traveling on? Also, how big is your layout? I'm considering enlarging mine by simply pushing two 5x9 ping pong tables together. One is being used as a train table the other is not.

My layout is 7x16 the out side loop is a slightly expanded 0-72 so I'd say the inside is 0-72 . The cars don't look bad on 0-72 but I'd say they'd overhang a good bit on anything smaller.

I'd love to see Lionel come out with a Legacy "J" with 85 foot smooth side cars with this level of detail . Coarse with 21 and a half inch cars it'd take some wide curves but I'd be first in line.

Do you know what made me an instant fan? That sci-fi looking rear view train, the one with all the portholes looking out and to think this was done in the 40's! Star Trekian design before it was thought of!

I wonder if good old Gene Rodenberry was inspired by these! It's beyond neat, it's super cool!

Yes, but much more canyon area because I have more room. One of the things I didn't like about my old layout was a single main line. I plan on still having a single line but with sidings for other trains to pass. The last layout was built before I had TMCC so I really couldn't run two trains on the single line. Now I can. It will make for more interesting running. Also I'm planning an electric short line with small steeple cab locos. Don

After looking at the cover on the MTH catalogue a few to many times I ordered a set
The passenger cars are not quite accurate the generic MTH cars but OK for the price with the loco as a set and added the dome;

The Milwaukee Road made a couple of beautiful observation cars with a sci-fi look.

Now that you point it out I noticed the difference in the real observation car in number of side windows and it is quite a difference, bummer! I wonder what made them do such a drastic change (in the O gauge version) in this hobby of ours?

Is it not realism that is most attractive?

Halving the number of windows certainly diminishes the look that the original builder must have been trying to achieve, I'd say! Has the subject been broached at events in the past that I don't know about (such as York)? If so what has been the response?

There are two kinds of Skytop observation cars. The one with fewer windows is a sleeper; the one with more windows is a parlor car. Both are prototypically correct; you would typically see the sleeper/observation on the Olympian Hiawatha and the parlor/observation on the day trains such as the Twin Cities Hiawatha.

The Train 101 consist is all MTH Rail King except the Skytop which is Lionel. The Hudson is the Rail King Imperial model with PS2.0. Did you know that The Milwaukee Road had trackage rights on the Long Island Rail Road? On my railroad it does!

Things are going great. We found a wonderful beach about five minutes from the house that we didn't know about. It's called Baby Beach. This morning we snorkeled in the beautiful clear water, came home and took a dip in the pool. I don't know how I'm going to have time to build a layout. Just kidding. I getting things ready for the layout this afternoon. Still planning it. I'll keep you posted and take lots of pictures. Don

Unfortunately, when I visited the ferry and skydomes in 2004 (or maybe 2005) along the waterfront in Erie, PA, the ferry was already settling (sinking) into the mud on the bottom of inlet and the two Milwaukee Road skydomes on its deck had be vandalized. Your photos look as if it must have been taken just after the ferry was moved to the inlet when its floating Milwaukee Road skydome restaurant went bust!

Love that AtlasO set of Milwaukee passenger FM Erie Built Art Deco diesels, wish I had not remained undecided about buying them for I appreciate their
over-the-top styling.

With regards to the ferry and the two Milwaukee Skytop Pullmans, there was an effort to rebuild the Lansdowne, the ferry which had those two cars permanently mounted, opened up inside and made into a cocktail lounge: I understand that the cars were purchased from the Canadian National in the 1970's, chopped up and welded in place while the ferry was moored in the Detroit area. I guess that the whole thing was in use as a restaurant and lounge for a number of years, then changed hands and fell into general disrepair. None of the remains was really worth saving because it had been so terribly altered. For example, the Landsdowne had been a side-wheel car ferry that ran between Detroit and Windsor, Canada equipped with two steam engines, one on either side of the boat. The developers had removed one engine and cut the other in half as kind of a special interest display.

The Skytops, which I believe had been the Arrow Creek and the Gold Creek, were moved onto the tracks on the floor of the boat, welded into place and the two inside walls of both cars, were removed, a new floor and half roof was fashioned into place and the resulting "room" became a cocktail lounge with the bar over the opening between the two cars.

So there really wasn't much left and certainly nothing that could have been restored as either a ferry boat or two passenger cars. They were completely cut up and scrapped.

Regarding the Atlas FM units.....did Atlas offer 2 different versions of these units, one being a "high priced" version?

Anyone have the MTH units? If so, how are they?

scale, with the extra room, why stay with a single main line? is that what the Milwaukee mostly had? the passing sidings will make for some fun ops (make sure they are long enough!), but it is always nice to be able to have a couple of trains running and just sit back and enjoy without worrying about meets.

Forrest, most shots you see of the Milwaukke are single tracked. I will single track the Cascade mountain area with maybe a helper engine siding and a long siding before the climb. Other parts will have double track. Don

SW, I agree, I wish they had done the small window. I checked my #9 engine with the books and indeed that FM was the large window version. Atlas is right on. The chrome nose is beautiful but the original extra cost was a hard thing to take though I'm glad I got it. Don
