Right you are, Wallace....they ARE the Best!

I would like like to see a Phillies (or Eagles) subway set.

I purchased the Chicago Cubs set several months ago at a "blowout"? price simply because I wanted the engine.  Based on info I got from a retailer I deal with, and from Lionel, this engine is just like the newer model polar express berkshire.  By newer I mean it has the larger can motor. Since I paid for the entire set what some pay for just a new Polar Express engine, I decided to give it try - at the very least I would have an extra engine I wanted (to repaint) and the track, transformer (CW-80), and passenger cars were basically thrown in for free.

Once I got it open and checked everything out, I realized it was a really neat specialty set.  Its basically a Polar express set painted in baseball colors.  The fastrack and CW-80 are like any other RTR set.  The passenger cars roll easily and look good if the baseball theme is what you are after.  If not, there are a lot of spare parts there for a whole slew of very common Lionel passenger cars.  The engine I got runs well, goes faster than necessary, but has power enough to pull 10 traditional boxcars very well. In fact, putting several cars behind it helps it pull smoother at the lower (more realistic) speeds.  Cutting a second slot in the drawbar pulls the tender closer to the cab, doing away with the big gap between them but not causing interference on the 036 curves.

I like the set!  For a baseball fan, it should be fun to run or maybe just display. Otherwise, it seems like a great way to add to a traditional layout at a very reasonable price.  If you are familiar with the more recent Polar Express sets, this looks almost identical to me (paint scheme excepted), for considerably lower cost.

Hope this helps . . . .

AMCDave   -   I'll give this a try   -   The Cubs passenger cars I have are "basically" the same as the PE passenger cars.  EXCEPT! . . . PE cars have small pins in the roof (to hold accessory pieces in place?), as well as window silhouettes depicting PE story figures. Cubs passenger cars have no figures in their window covers (just opaque), and no pins in the roof.  Moldings, window placement, couplers and trucks; as well as overall dimensions  -  are identical.  I suppose all the baseball sets use the same rolling stock blanks for painting  -  if true, all baseball passenger cars are essentially the same as the PE cars (including the extension on the observation car).

I recently saw a blowout price of 149 somewhere on the baseball sets, while it takes over 200 dollars to acquire a new PE set.

I say that the SF Giants just proved that they are the best baseball team.  They have won   three World Series in the last five years.  Go Giants.

All the baseball train sets seem to be East coast teams while the best baseball is played in the West.  I am waiting for a Giants and A's set.
