Hi, I have never had a layout.  I was used to adding my Legacy Engines to my Command Base with the little plug in orange cartridges Lionel no longer supplies.  I have about 30 engines that only act as Command Base 1 because I don't know how to load their data to make them act as Legacy engines that they are.

I am sure the answer may be simple, but I don't know how to do it.

i have a large oval of 60 inch curves on the carpet.  I had to glue all the curves to each other so they would stay together.  About 7 straights in the long direction.

Can anyone provide an answer?  Thanks in advance.  Do I need those tracks that can read train data?  How do they hookup to the base? I have 2 of these in a box somewhere.

I just moved into a house, so most things are in a box somewhere,  I have a 4 car garage full of boxes, and a very Large basement half full of O and G scale trains, with a few boxes of N and Z added in for good measure.

Thanks in advance.  An old guy who has never had to do this before without the orange data chip!  30 engines for real to add as legacy somehow!

LCS sensor track info on setup and required wiring (power Y cable) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSnQ_a0QzO8

Another video on the system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo4kkYvznMU

Note, this ONLY works if the engine and system meets the following conditions:

#1 The engine is a Legacy engine with the IR transmitter. Not all have it.

#2 You have the sensor track connected to the Legacy base and powered.

#3 you have the sensor track programmed and the system is also programmed for update mode.

Otherwise, you are stuck doing the manual method.

I assume you're using Fastrack - rather than gluing pieces together, you should use small binder clips to hold two sections together and keep them from coming apart.

Doesn't the alphabet appear on the screen and you scroll with the throttle know and select the letters and numbers?

Guess again.   Note the keypad when I'm entering the name.  The numbers don't appear in the list on the main display, they intend them to be entered directly, it's faster.

Hey RT,

The knee is slowly getting better.  I start 1 hour PT sessions in about 2 weeks.  Had all my in home therapy.  I can actually kneel down.   Problem is that it is very difficult to get up standing again.  Wow, though it is great to have the joint pain gone!

I have more than 1000 yes, one thousand boxes.  I actually found a five inch track section, and a new LCS box.  I added them already to the circle.  Running a fancy NYC J3A around the oval.  Some might consider it boring, but after 12 years of not being allowed to run trains, it is great!  Sometimes it is hard to realize this is MY home, and I get to do what I want, WHERE I want!   :-)

Hi Don,

You have a great attitude!  This hobby has so many ways of enjoying it. I like your style on buying the engines and worrying about the layout later.  For the longest time, all I could afford was the catalog, aka the Dream Book.  Hopefully, you will be in a position soon to build a more permanent layout. Best, Dave

Dave,

As I unpack and store the contents of the boxes I have a totally finished room in my basement 27 by 25.  The real layout will reside there,  Of course I have to get some boxes empty and their contents sorted and put where they will belong.  So I am planning on a layout about 22 feet by 12 feet,  I want to use the largest curves I can, so large engines and 21 " passenger cars look good going through the curves.  The room has a very nice carpet, and real 1/4" solid oak paneling. (might be layers of veneer, but it is all oak) I am hoping by summer to start laying the bench work. Right now the room is half empty.  I have too many trains, so I am hoping to sell a lot to someone like Train-Z.  I have just about 100 modern engines, then some pre-war, and a few postwar. The room is about half empty already.

Maybe I should try selling on the forum first.
