I had to purchase a new Trainmaster base; however, the connection is different from my previous Trainmaster which had a " speaker plug" type connector leading to a small transformer. The new connection has a 3 pin connector. How do I get this type of connector and do I splice it into the transformer or connect to a ZW transformer

What's the product number of your new Trainmaster base?
71-2867-250
That is NOT a Lionel product number. That did however bring up a manual for the TMCC PowerMaster witch is NOT a TMCC command base. The PowerMaster will control track voltage from your Cab-1 remote. Here's the link to the manual
You were looking for a Command Base and ended up with a PM-1 PowerMaster. Neither has any speaker-plug appearing connection, the Command Base has a coaxial jack, a RS232 type 9 pin port, and a "U" binding post.
Lionel re-did the powermaster cable to a 3 pin moles connector that looks like the original plug in cable but added a third pin for whatever reason.
Perhaps Dave Olsen from Lionel can explain.

That pin is there to turn on the new PH bricks, which are now unpowered unless that third pin is present.
I believe I have what you need which is Lionel P/N# 6-12893 Power adaptor cable that fits the original PM-1 Lionel P/N # 6-12867. I have included the pictures. The 'A" or hot side has an inline fuse , and the "U" or common is the ground. You would just need to connect this to your ZW and plug the three prong adaptor into the trainmaster base, and it will only fit one way. Of course, your " A" and "U" on the PM-1 base would go to the track Lockon. The last ( sideway ) picture is of the newer Legacy Trainmaster bridge base. ( just for reference.
