I am thinking I can and with all things that I ask this is research so here goes....can I use an ERR AC Commander on open frame AC motors in standard gauge engines? I have a couple of MTH repro units with the open frame motors and I was wondering........

It depends on the unit? I have done a repro unit and the motor was so inefficient that it did not have much pulling power. Others my be ok?
Should work fine, I doubt you'll pull that much current. Probably wouldn't hurt to augment the stock heatsink a bit if you're running heavy and/or long consists.
Because I abuse my Cruise Commanders by running them with four motors, I use a 12 volt computer fan on my Cruise Commander installations. Have it blowing on the triacs and the bridge rectifier, if the rectifier is fitted.
The AC Commander doesn't have a bridge, but it does have the triacs.

That is correct. Hence the phrase "if the rectifier is fitted."
My point, although possibly poorly presented, was to have a fan blowing on the triacs to allow them to more easily handle any loads that approached their maximum capacity.
Yep, a fan or a larger heatsink might be a good investment for heavy loads.
