I have been looking for a small transformer to power a few lights for my wife's dollhouse.  In my search I found these on Amazon.Com:

LightTech 60 Watt transformer.

http://www.amazon.com/LET-60-C...rds=lightech+60+watt

They are also available at Home Depot and other electronic stores.  Home Depot has them for about $15.  I have bought two so far and they seem to be very dependable.  I picked the up 60 watt versions but they also make a 75 watt and a 150 watt version.  The 60 watt is about the size of a 9 volt battery.  Its really tiny.  It has overload protection and short circuit protection.  They do not get very warm and make no noise.  For the price I found they can't be beat.  The 60 watt version can handle up to 5 amps.

I just had to wire a plug on the black and white wires.  The blue wires are the fixed 12 volts.  The transformers have a minimum load rating in order to supply power.  I believe the 60 watt minimum load is 3 watts.

For the size of a 9 volt battery, they can't be beat.

When one has additional features they want lighted or animated, I always recommend an additional transformer or two depending on the amount of features to be dealt with.
