Hi,
I just got a MTH Blue Comet standard gauge set and I can not keep the cars coupled. Any information, tips, or tricks on keeping these together would be helpful.

Since it is a reproduction you can replace the couplers with those with spring assist available from suppliers like Hennings Trains.
If I am not mistaken, the parts dealers, like Olsen's, have the springs that can be attached to the couplers.
Is it possible that the coupler shafts were bent in shipping and they are not lining up properly with each other?
Most likely you are connecting them wrong. The 2 straight shafts end up parallel to each other and the plates hold them together.

i'll second this opinion. when these couplers are latched correctly i typically even find them more difficult to break apart than i sometimes prefer. this is of course assuming the modern couplers are identical to prewar production.

You just can't beat a good tab & slot coupler. Easy to hook up and easy to unhook, and once hooked up will generally stay that way until you uncouple them. lol
Three rail versions have the slide shoes and that is usually the reason. I got nothing else, I don't have standard Gauge
