There is a setting for motor type selection-the can motors in the SD-80's be a small or large motor. I would say the pittmans in a steamer would be a large type, the ones in a sd-80 are medium in size in compared to those pittmans and the cheapies that Lionel uses in their starter sets that are small.

I guess the Nudge mode operation only works on the Cruise M board engine and not on the Lionel odyssey engine if you put those 2 engines together to run. I don't want to mention that L-up word so I don't cross over Rich Melvin's line!!!

Everything is a large motor except for tiny stuff like speeders and the like.  They actually say 1" in diameter, and I've never felt the need to program any of them for a small motor.

While the nudge feature only works with the Cruise Commander M board, you can try to "nudge" it to match the Odyssey locomotive.  I confess I've never tried to run those two types together.

Bought a MTH Conrail sd-80 very cheap, had the TMCC boards from parts and bought the cruise M that cost me about what I paid for the MTH engine. Hoping to match a Lionel SD-80 Conrail with odyssey with the other engine. They do run together as the faster engine is the cruise m one but slightly faster.

It does state to use the nudge feature on the slower one but was thinking exactly what you said and slow down the cruie m one slightly. I do not see any type of bucking of the 2 engines when operating together.

I did try a Legacy Conrail U30C some time back in an earlier post about putting those together-the odyssey one and the Legacy one which did not work out. I might try putting the Legacy one with the cruise m engine and see what the results are.

My real quest is to run all those Conrail pieces together!!!

Did it , done that to no avail. Had the Legacy diesel set in TMCC mode and still would not run with the Odyssey engine. I would turn the odyssey off in the Sd-80 but you can't on the older versions as you can easily turn off odyssey in the Legacy ones.

But, I am going to try and run the Legacy one with the ERR engine which have identical can motors. And I am going to try and "nudge" the ERR one and see what happens when running with the odyssey Sd-80. They do run together for now but the ERR starts out a little quicker.

You do NOT get these issues with MTH engines-I've seen steamers running together with diesels!!
