Newer PS3 engines will now automatically start up and nove forward if the thumbwheel is advanced to increase speed from zero.
This is a year newer than my Alco S2. Just picked this up.
My year-old Premier Shay, 6-month old RK Imperial Decapod and a couple of other PS3's exhibit the new behavior.

How do you differentiate older vs newer PS3 as when i roll the thumbwheel it does not start up?
of the switch are completely isolated from their adjacent outside rails.

Now, that's useful information. Within the last 3 weeks, I received my RK CoG
ES44AC, and couldn't help but observe "start-up" with initial roll of speed control.
I had considered asking the forum if I needed to do some kind of feature reset. It's normal behavior.

Help me out here.... PS-3s still power up dark and silent but come to life after the speed is scroll up from 0.. Stealth mode is now gone?? I suppose we can still turn the sound off.

Yes, simply by having the conventional pot turned up to max and the DCS sound level lower, or vice-versa.
Seems stealth mode is still here with proto-2 and version 5. Not a big deal, I suppose if one wants to run with out sound just turn it off with the remote.
I have some PS3 locos that still run silent when I dont start them up. Most notably the P42 Genesis locos do this
Some of the newer (circa late 2014 or so) PS3 engines will automatically start up as soon as the thumbwheel speed control is advanced, without needing a Startup command.
This is referred to buy MTH as a "feature".
The mu sets of a couple of years ago did it also.
FWIW, the steam upgrade kits also do a startup when the thumbwheel is scrolled.
