Happy New Year. I just purchased a NIB older Lionel S-1 Electric, and intend on replacing the electro couplers on both ends. I don't care about uncoupling at all, and hate those Lobster mits. I intend on putting a Kadee on the rear, and a scale dummy with gear up front.

QUESTION: By removing both electro couplers, will it cause the engine or electronics any trouble? I think removing these will require completely trashing them.

No. Most of the electric lobster claws that I have removed, I simply unplugged the two wires running to the electro-coupler. Others, I just cut the two wires and taped up the bare ends. No big deal.

I've cut plenty of electro-couplers off my locomotives and I simply cut the wires or if they actually go to some kind of plug remove them there.  It does not affect the running capability of the locos at all.  I just did another pair recently when I picked up a used PS2 C30-7 to replace the PS1 chassis of my NJT 3RS version.

Have fun with the snippers!
