I'm new to Legacy and I've only had it for a week. It has 1.52 installed new, works great. Question is do I need to, should I update to 1.6? What are the improvements 1.6 brings over 1.52? What do I need to update? How do I update?

Strongly suggest you do it. On the Lionel support page type in the Lionel 990 item number and scroll down to the 1.6 upgrade all the details are their. improves features and functionality of the system and sets the stage for new engine.
I did it, very easy to do. Follow the directions to down load the Legacy Utilities Apps, create the module (need the back re writable one). Follow the directions to do the upgrade - takes about 5 minutes to do the base and the remote.
Legacy v1.6 adds an "AUX 3" identification for one of the CAB-2 buttons. Pressing this button will set an American Flyer S Gauge Challenger locomotive off at full speed until it crashes into something, runs off the track, or destroys itself. Upgrades beyond v1.52 have added this "suicide function," so I have downgraded to v1.52 after testing every upgrade and repairing any damage the Challenger has caused.
This may be true only for the American Flyer Challenger, but I would caution anyone with locomotives built earlier than 2013 to test them with AUX 3 as a precautionary step. I'm surprised Lionel still has not fixed this bug.
Unless you have a diner car with railsounds I wouldn't bother with the upgrade.
True, the upgrade is for railsounds diner cars and some other features I view this as Apple, MS or any of the cell companies that offer upgrades - 9 out of 10 times it makes a difference that is not always apparent. Easy to upgrade so why not, keeps you current
well I'm in no rush and it doesn't seem it's super important, stop everything and do now. Thanks for the input.
