This morning I wore a jacket to Church that sparked a real interest from another parishioner. This nice lade tapped me on the shoulder and asked me where she could get a Sante Fe, New Mexico jacket like mine, as it was one of her favorite cities. My wife Elizabeth chuckled a bit and told her that it was the Sante Fe Chief emblem representing a famous passenger train. Well that started it. The people around us said you must be into trains and do you have a layout (we can visit). I had no idea that going to Church on Sunday could spark such a conversation. I must admit, it was a lot of fun to see this interest.

How about you, on occasion do you wear a jacket, hat or shirt of your favorite railroad? Has it also sparked an interest?

I wear many different railroad t-shirts when working around the house and yard. My daughters would subject me to too much ridicule (and I'm a very sensitive guy) if I wore some of the more 'busy' train shirts 'in public.' One of my beefs is that there aren't enough train shirts with a breast pocket logo....something a little less artsy than a 14" painting of the Black Diamond.

I have T-shirts from both Conrail & CSX that I wear to the gym. Also have one each of CSX, Conrail, & Amtrak baseball caps I wear at different times. Years ago when I had the CSX hat on during my walk around the park in Philly, a couple approaching in the opposite direction asked me if I knew a person by name. When I responded I didn't know him the wife said to me "well he's worked at CSX for years". Had to laugh at that one.

My ever lovin' better 3/4, bought me a nice warm, zipoper front, jacket with the logo, not only on the back but over the breast pocket area, too.  I had a light weight, button down wind-breaker that I had been wearing with the logo stenciled on, but it's starting to look a bit tired.  I wear both to York depending on the temperature out, often to make calls, shop, travel, etc. and I'm amazed at the number of people that comment.  Usually they have to ask what it means but i have no trouble giving them an answer, and that depends on how much time they want to spend, listening.

Oh; the logo:  THE MILWAUKEE ROAD of course.  Could there be any other?

Wow.  This hits close to home.  I have a nice Super Chief shirt.  It's not really appropriate to wear to church but it has gotten comments at the grocery store, etc.

Frankly, I think model railroaders are a little more sensitive/defensive about the hobby than they need to be.  Many of us (including me) are often reluctant to bring it up because we expect people to think we're childish or something.  I have never had anything but a positive, and in most mostly enthusiastic, reaction.  Usually the first question is "What scale?" I've learned to answer "O gauge - you know Lionel . . . "  because many people aren't sure what gauge O is.  Regardless, people are truly interested.

I sure do but my experience came at the Barber Shop a few

months back.  On a warm Monday morning here in Tampa I

walked into my Barber Shop with my CSX Railroad Shirt with

a big SD-70 on the front.

My Barber said good morning, and saw the T-Shirt and said

"Bill I did not know you were into trains" I replied "Big Time".

He told me his daughter worked for CSX as a Purchasing Agent

of Rolling Stock.  To say I was impressed is a understatement.

To add to the moment he told me if I looked under the reading

table I would find Railroading Magazine's.

Now when I get my five week hair cut I go right for the Railroad

Magazine's. Good stuff for a railroad guy like me.  Great Topic Brian.

Many thanks,

I am very proud to be an O-Gauge model train enthusiast and have never had second thoughts about showing it. In all the times I have worn a denim shirt or jacket with a train logo, I have only had favorable comments that have sparked interesting conversations. The jacket I wore yesterday to Church is black and the Sante Fe Chief logo is on the back and front and very tastefully done.

So my recommendation for what it is worth is to show off your love of trains as well.

Brian - I too have had good experiences when I wear clothing with trains on them.  I can't remember any negative comments and a lot of good ones.  You will be surprised at how many people are train fans, both model and real trains, that will strike up a conversation.  I know I like to talk to people I meet wearing them.

I own two Southern Pacific winter coats(The Black Widow & SP baseball style). I own more T-Shirts & hats, I haven't counted them all lately. What really gets attention here on the left coast would be my PRR polo shirts & hats. I have two "Still Plays With Toy Trains" t-shirts & hats.

My better-half grabs a bunch of my t-shirts from time to time. With this she tells me that she's ordered more...Go Figure??? LOL!!!
