I installed this in my lionel hotbox car and programed it for acc #1.  When I push acc and the #1 what do I push next to turn it on and off.  I thought it was just the aux button but that does nothing.  I am using the R100 mode setting for the kline engine pulling the train with 128 speed step setting.  any suggestions?

Which Mini Commander version, ASC?  Which output did you use?  From the manual.

The Mini Commander outputs are controlled from the Cab-1 key sequences.
When configured as an accessory (ACC):
• AUX1 controls high current output one (HC1)
• AUX2 controls high current output two (HC2)
• Numbers 1 & 4 control low current one (LC1)
• Numbers 3 & 6 control low current two (LC2)
Pressing the number 1 – which is the same as the “up arrow” on the CAB-1 overlays, activates LC1. Number 4 turns off LC1, shown as the “down arrow” on the Cab-1 overlays.

One other thought - the board may be bad. I have not had good luck with ERR boards even though they claim I am the only one. Try using HC2. I received a mini commander board with no output on HC1 but HC2 worked fine. Also - you should test the output with a voltmeter while it is still open to make sure it is working and not in pulse mode. Good luck. It's a must have with the hotbox!

The easiest way to check the board is to put a 12-16V lamp on one of the supplied connectors.  Check each output with the remote to get a feel for the operation of the board, and what controls the outputs.

More likely than not, you simply need to configure the board, and on the Hotbox car, it takes a bit of patience to setup the configuration.

From the manual:

CONFIGURATION USING A JUMPER
Power off the track for at least 10 seconds
Add the jumper
Power on the track

As ACC:
ACC + ## + SET          (where ## is the ACC number you want)
AUX1 + 9 + BOOST
AUX2 + 9 + BOOST

As ENG:
ENG + ## + SET          (where ## is the ENG number you want)
AUX1 + 9 + BOOST
AUX2 + 9 + BOOST

Power off the track for at least 10 seconds
Remove the jumper
