I am preparing a pre-order for some ERR parts and have a couple of questions.

I have two GP-30 with TMCC.  Model 6-28855 and 6-28862.  Both issued out of the same 2007 catalog.  I had hoped to run them together, but after several tries, using all the tricks I could find on this forum they will not cooperate and run at close enough speeds to lash up.  They both have the same features listed, including Odyssey with switch, and according to Lionel parts, the same DCDS boards #691DCDSHM5.  They also have the same front and rear trucks and motors.

In searching this forum, I found some posts suggesting upgrading them both to cruise M should solve my problem.  Before I ordered I hoped to confirm that I'm heading the right direction.  I have never tried this before, but do have some experience with electronics and this does not look to be a complicated upgrade.

My other candidate for upgrade is a Lionmaster Class A with TMCC 6-38049.  It shows in the parts list having DCDS #691DCDSFT1 (notes include reference to replacement #691DCDSHM5).  I would like to improve the cruise on the engine with cruise M also, along with an eventual upgrade to the smoke with a Super-Chuffer.  For this engine I would like to verify that the cruise M will fit in this semi-scale engine and somethone with some electrical experience can take on.

A Cruise M is about 1/8" longer than a DCDR. Not sure about a DCDS but it will be at least as long as a DCDR so assume you may need an additional .125".

Your GP30s should be identical mechanically so a Cruise M may help though I have not a problem to get two similar Odyssey engines (F3s) to run together and in fact run three with not a problem. They have to be in Odyssey mode. In TMCC mode (Odyssey off) they will start at different speed steps and not stay together.

Thats interesting. The lionel parts page shows them to be the same. They are supposed to be Lion Drive which means you should be able to rotate the trucks 90 degrees and drop them off the frame.

If in fact they are different with different gear ratios then a Cruise M may not help.

You can adjust Cruise Ms but only by a small amount.
