Okay having bought a Legacy set shortly after they first came out and selling it shortly after, I have purchased a brand new Legacy set with the latest version and am determined to learn this. I have hooked it to the test track on my bench and when I powered it this morning the red charging lights came on and are still on for a couple of hours now. The handheld is quite hot. Is this normal? I also just received a new Legacy SD70ACe that has to go back as the sounds are barely audible either in conventional or command control.  Doesn't bod well 2 new purchases and both have to go back. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Paul.

Sorry about your issues. Your Legacy handheld should not be hot; the charging system is most likely faulty. My Legacy charger has never worked properly. Lionel will repair it free of charge, but what I have done (after reading others' posts) is to replace the rechargeable batteries with alkaline/lithium batteries and set the base unit to "non-charging" (small black toggle switch on underside of base unit, I think).

Don't know about the sounds, but there is a potentiometer for the sound level in the top area, usually in the concealed area under the "hatch" where the smoke/speed/sound toggle switches are. Sometimes this is turned down too low; maybe turning this up a bit will make the loco sounds a bit louder.

At some point in time I'll do something about my charger, but for right now, using lithium AAs works for me.

Hope this helps! Disclaimer: I am not a Legacy expert!

Regards, Bruce

I tried the potentiometer under the hatch and also tried under Legacy, sounds stay barely audible if you have your ear right next to the engine, a foot away and you hear nothing.

I appreciate the tip on setting it to none charging and replace the batteries however I guess it goes back to Lionel also, as a brand new item shouldn't have to have a jury rigged work around.

The train brake slider on mine is very loose and shaking the remote will cause it to move a little, is this a problem or do I need to have Lionel look at also or is this normal? Thanks for any and all input.

things do come lose in shipping.

there has been plenty of talk around here about Lionel quality control.  it looks like what is happening is things are coming lose on the ride on the water and when they get to the dealer the dealer does not open the box and check them out.

hang in there, Lionel will take care of you or you can email the director of customer Mike Reagan himself.  be sure to check out lionel customer service videos lots of information.

I agree with bigdodgetrain. The brake slider sort of clinches it to send the Legacy back. The "regular battery" AAs work for me at present. I have contacted Lionel about my Legacy charger issue, and they have told me that even now (2 yrs out) they will service the Legacy free of charge. I just haven't done it yet.

I have no clue about the sound in the diesel. I haven't had that problem. The only solution I could think of was the "pot;" failing that solving the problem, sounds like back to the service folks.

FWIW, I have had excellent service from both my LHS (near Raleigh, NC in this case) as well as from Lionel directly. Prompt, courteous, and reliably repaired items have come back working better than when I purchased them new.  Although a hassle (and I agree with the sentiment that, for the money, it should work right out of the box), I think you'll be ultimately pleased with going to Legacy, as bigdodgetrain has said.

Sorry couldn't help more,

Bruce

Its normal for the train brake slider to be loose,( not to be confused with the boost/ brake/direction rocker which is the actual brake) this is not a spring loaded lever like the bell/whistle slider. The brake slider, not really a brake, is designed so you can set it at an infinite number of positions to increase or decrease the "load" on the locomotive making it work harder or easier with varying engine labor sounds.https://ogrforum.com/d...ent/6216614241844679 The heat issue is the combination of the normal warming of the base, coupled with added heat from the battery charging system. I turned off the charger as mentioned above and charge my legacy batteries on an external charger that I use for other rechargable AA's. IMO I'd send the loco back and keep the remote, and either use disposable batteries or a different charger.

Thanks for the input on the slider, the battery charging thing does bother me and I will send it back to Lionel for that. Being heavily into DCS I have always felt it was stupid of MTH to NOT have a way to keep batteries charged in the remote. Cell phones, laptops, Nooks, and so many other electronic devices we use charge the batteries in the remote, so what is so hard about making it work in our command control systems? That is just one of the features of Legacy that I like, so I really want it to work correctly, if it can. If not I at least now know how to work around it.

Yep tried several things with the tech at Lionel on the phone and they said it needed to come in. Personally I think a board needing to be re-seated, or loose wire is the culprit, that I could do myself, but Lionel makes it very clear about how to void a warranty lol!

Paul, definitely send the remote and charger back.  They will fix it with a new board ans some other parts.   I had same issue out of the box.  I bought v1.2 and all those had the same issue.  it works perfect now.  And charges perfectly.  I agree that you shouldn't have to rig something brand new.

Mike Reagan made something perfectly clear at the LUG meeting.  Without a working Legacy system, most folks won't buy Legacy engines.  That is why they turn these around pretty quick and has done his best to have the repairs done without cost to the users other than initial shipping.

Paul let Mike and his crew take care of it.

That sd70 sound issue is more than likely just the amplifier board that has been knocked loose and is not seated properly. A very common issue with the newer sd70's. The amplifier board can become unseated very easily as it is the top board in the tier and the only support the amplifier  board has are the group of male connector pins that it sits in. A nylon tie wrap or how Lionel fixed one of my sd70's an electrical tape wrap is the fix to keep the board in place.
