First Time Legacy User

You'll be finding out new stuff for awhile with the Legacy system, it's a voyage of discovery.

I have all the LCS stuff sitting here now, but I need to find an iPad that won't break the bank so I can get it all running.

I'm working on it Marty, the next batch are at the assembly house!

Since you're new to the Legacy System and since you're also connected online, I might recommend that you also explore the capabilities of the system via Lionel's nicely done instructional videos.

As of this past weekend, I'm a first time user as well. The videos are helpful. The system itself is unbelievable--if anyone is on the fence about adapting Legacy to their layout, I found the cost of entry well worth it. And my current layout is only 4x8!! (Another point for those who contend size doesn't matter. ) The manual is well written, too.

Thanks Allan, I must say Rudy's Dialog progression video is quite informative. I stumbled upon some myself while operating though now I have the full story. 

Just an FYI for you.  Apple sells product refurbished.  I've bought many things from them this way.  It saves you money, and you get the same warranty as new. 

Another FYI for you, Apple has announced a special event for next week.  I would not be surprised if new iPads are announced.  If you want latest and greatest, hold out.  They will release new ones before Christmas I would bet.  If you want to save extra money, it might also be worth waiting for the 2014 iPad to be released as it will drive prices of the current and older moldels down as well.

Well, I'd like to get the best deal possible, but I'm certainly jonesing to use all this new LCS stuff.

Send me the iPad and I'll send you a video of the LCS in action.

As my setup is currently a temporary carpet central, I typically unplug the transformer between sessions. 

Do I lose the engine information I load into the Legacy Cab/Base if I were to unplug it?

Really itching to get a switching layout put together to put Legacy and my brain through their respective paces 

I use an outlet strip with an on/off switch on it.  Disconnects everything from the power line.  No lightning damage possible.

I think you got it backwards   Send me the LCS wifi and I'll let you know how great it is!

I do have one on order, but my LHS has not recieved them yet, so I am forced to be patient, or pretend to be.

Will you be using FastTrack command switches?  command switches are great and I really like throwing routes and single switches.  Adds a lot of fun to the layout.

and GRJ - no need to be greedy.  Marty can send you the iPad and me the wifi!

I may grab a command control switch or two for larger carpet central running. 

I'm planning on a 2.5' x 16' switching layout and will do either manual throws or simple push button. Unsure of what brand of track I'll use, though I've seen opinions by many here on the forums about respective choices.  

Only caveat about using a plug strip is to make sure your power to the trains is off and to give time for the legacy base to boot before turning the power to the trains on (about 10 seconds is all.. Maybe less)

Also some cheaper plug strips have been known interfere with the TMCC signal

Chris, FWIW I have the Legacy on the same strip as the transformer, and it's never been an issue.  My test bench TMCC base is wired the same, and stuff never fails to come up in command mode.

Mine has come on a a whole and never had an issue.

That being said, typically I usually power the base first, then the power.  But as I said, I never had an issue either.

I agree, no issue on mine, but some have reported that they have had weird results. I'm my case I turn on the strip and by the time I reach over to rotate the ZW-L levers all seems good

Also never had any problems with plug strips messing with the TMCC signal, but once again other  have said they did
