Has anyone put his shelves on cement block walls?,is there any problem in doing this?,i would use concrete anchors to hold the shelves up,putting them on the cement block walls is my only option right now.

I haven't put them on block walls but I don't see any problem so long as your anchors are strong and in the wall tight.
I don't see why that would be a problem if you use the proper fasteners. I have these shelves (attached to studs behind plasterboard) and love them.
I have mounted them in block, no issues........... concrete anchors and you should be good to go. Factor in what weight you are going to put on the shelves to determine how many anchors. I put 6 for each shelf to be safe..................

Mark, was that 6 anchors for a 6' long shelf?,i sent Glenn an e-mail to find out what the the cost would be for 2 6' shelves shipped to NJ,if it is not to high i will order them.
Glenn, will bring pre orders to York free. If you plan on going give him a call soon and save the shipping.

Correct anchors is all that matters. I have a few at my work bench and more to be put up later in layout room. Good stuff.
I have many of his shelves. The proper fastener for block is a Tapcon. We use them on everything dealing with CBS construction in Florida. Look them up on Google and get all the information. They are carried Nationwide at Lowes and Home Depot.
Marty,I have some tapcon screws,i have used them in the past,if i get the shelves,i am not sure which anchors i want to use yet as there are other options i could use i will decide which way to go when i get the shelves,if the shipping isn't to high.
Paul,i don't plan on going to York & it wouldn't be cost effective to make the trip there just to get the shelves, thanks for the suggestion anyhow.
Note that the length of the tapcons should be at least the same as the #10 X 1 1/2" screws per instructions on the GSDS website.

Just two shelves? I started with 12, and had to re order 3 times. The more I used them the more places I found to use the shelves. Shipping to Indiana wasn't bad.
rboatertoo, I allready have 2 display cases in another part of the basement, these 2 shelves would be just for engines to sit on while waiting there turn to be run on the layout, i don't have that many engines,so i don't think i would need anymore shelves but we will see what happens.
Mike CT, I will keep that thought in mind, thanks for the suggestion.
mount plywood to walls with special screws (blue color) that are available from home depot
no anchors required screws go right into masonry (pilot holes drilled first)mount shelving to plywood and you are done, mine have been up for 15 years no problems

Yes, 6 in the 6ft length, overkill most likely but heavy steam engines were placed on them so just to be safe..............
Mounting to studs.
24" spacing. One at each end, one at the 2ft. and 4ft. marks. (total of four fasteners) most likely the minimum required.
16" spacing. End 0", 16", 32", 48", 64", other end. (total of 5 or 6 fasteners).
(4) to (6) fasteners per 6 ft. shelf.
Mark,Thanks for responding,i just got the price for 2 shelves $30.00,plus $36.65 for shipping to N.J.,total of $66.65,that's high to me,i don't know if i want them that bad to pay $36.65 shipping, although i do like the low profile of the shelves,i will have to think about this a little more,i could just as easy make them out of wood that i already have on hand, but like i said i do like the low profile of Glenn's shelves.
Hello Gerald, I have 5 sections of this type of shelving on my basement walls which are block.
I used the Lead Style Anchors and used (4) Lead Anchors per shelf.
One thing about the Lead Anchors when you thread the screw in to the anchor, the screw will tighten up against the shelf holding the shelf tight against the wall.
With Tapcon's sometimes the Tapcon will not always tighten up against the shelf due to the fact that drilling a block the drilled hole may become slightly oversized for the tapcon used.
These Lead Anchors are a Blue Hawk brand which can be found at any Lowes Store in the aisle with the Tapcon Brand fasteners.
Hope this helps !!!!
Markstrittmatt, I will look at the lead anchors next time i go to lowe's if i get the shelves the lead anchors may be a better way to go. Thanks, Gerald
