Hi all,
I purchased an MTH K4 Imperial set just before Christmas and it's been running lie a champ. Today I took it off the layout to do some routine checking/lubing and I noticed on the left, rear-most rear driver, there was a glob of grease between the wheel and the frame/chassis. There was a lot of it; more that I would think you would ever use to grease everything on the engine that requires greasing. It was dark grey, which to me indicates that it had been there for a while collecting track dirt and such. Nasty looking stuff, but it didn't appear to have collected a lot of particulates. I got as much out and off the wheels as I could with a Q-tip, and returned it to the layout where it continues to run great. So, a few questions:
1) is this normal for a steamer? I haven't seen anything like it on my diesels, but the K4 is my only steam engine at the moment.
2) Is there really THAT much grease in there?
3) What is the best way to clean it out?
Note: There's a little screw on the bottom of the engine that says "Grease"; I assume you would open that to grease the worm gear. I didn't mess with it, but should I at all be concerned that so much of it has worked its way out?
Thanks!!!!
-Eric
